The officially non-vintaged but 2013 harvested Vin de France L'Enclos des Remparts Franc de Pied MMXIII is a bright, citrus-colored Sauvignon Blanc from the Sancerre. The wine opens with a very clear, elegant and subtle yet deep and concentrated bouquet of pure citrus fruits, white berries and fine mineral aromas. Full and with a great finesse and mineral purity. The wine combines complexity with finesse and elegance, and despite its concentration and long, persistent aftertaste always seems weightless. Lots of grip and thrills here, this wine is really fresh, but full of potential. It has a very long finish and is well structured.
This is the third vintage of a wine from a single vineyard of ungrafted vines, produced in a walled vineyard within the ruins of Sancerre's city walls. The vines are a selection from the vineyard of the Les Romains family. This is also the place with the most perfect flint and clay soil that Vacherons rightly predicts will give the wine its assertive style. This is also the place where the Sauvignon Blanc grapes will reach perfect ripeness on this particularly sunny, south-facing plot. The grapes are harvested by hand. Fermented on native yeasts and matured in barriques, after which the wine is bottled unfiltered. This wine cannot be labeled as Sancerre due to the experimental methods used in its production.
