The sharp readers know that red bordeaux rarely appears in my section about food and drinks. This is mainly because I love those wines myself, but then only the top and preferably beautifully matured, so at least six and preferably ten years old. I rarely get it in my glass. Never, actually. The perennial giant pool of young, modest burgundy has its own following. They like that stiff, that strict, that dark abrasion of the tannins. Ink pencil wine, my wife says. And that crowd considers all non-bordeaux wine for wimps.

Occasionally, however, a bottle comes along that I like and that can probably also through the bracket of the aficionados. Pierre Henri Cosyns' Lion Noir 2018 doesn't have the old-fashioned dustyness of yesteryear. You immediately dive on the deep side in a fruity pool full of cassis and blackberries. It also has some sweet cedar wood floating in it too. Certainly, the wine has some characteristic skid resistance, but it is so nice and modern, so cheerful. Drinkable a year and a half after the harvest, it is a curse for traditionalists in the Bordeaux church. But it works!
